Kiryū hook check

Video hook analyzer: check the first 3 seconds

Upload any short video and Kiryu tells you whether the opening would stop a stranger mid-scroll: what they see in the first frame, what they read and what they hear. If the hook is weak, you get a rewritten opening with the on-screen text, first line and first shot.

  • Closest look at the first 3 seconds
  • Compare several openings
  • Works for TikTok, Reels, Shorts and ads
  • A rewritten hook, not just a score

Why the first three seconds get their own check

In a feed, nobody has agreed to watch your video yet. They give it a moment, and the opening has to earn the rest. That's why the first thing Kiryu's review covers is the hook: the first three seconds: what a viewer sees, reads and hears, and whether they would stop scrolling.

A video hook analyzer is only useful if it looks closely, so Kiryu samples the opening seconds more densely than the rest of the video, reads the on-screen text exactly as written and transcribes the first spoken line. You don't get a score out of ten. You get what's there, what's missing and a better version.

The three layers of a hook, and what Kiryu reports

LayerWhat a viewer judgesWhat Kiryu reports
First frameIs there something to look at before anything is said? Movement, a face, a result, a surprising object. What's in the frame at 00:00, and whether the picture changes in the first second.
On-screen textCan it be read in about a second? Does it say why to keep watching? The exact words, quoted back, plus size, timing and whether the app's buttons cover them.
First words or soundDoes the first line get to the point, or start with "hi guys" or a pause? The transcript of the opening line, and any silence or loud jump at the start.
The promiseDoes the rest of the video pay off what the hook set up?Whether the idea is clear and when the payoff arrives, so the hook doesn't oversell.

How to check your hook

  1. 1

    Upload the video

Any short video: a TikTok, Reel, Short or ad. Upload the whole thing, not just the opening, so Kiryu can tell whether the hook promises what the rest delivers.

  2. 2

    Ask about the hook

Say "check my hook" and where it's going. If you have two or three versions of the opening, upload them in the same message and ask which one is strongest.

  3. 3

    Take the rewrite

Kiryu explains what the first seconds show, say and display, whether a stranger would stop, and gives you a rewritten opening. It can add a hook title or trim a slow start in the same chat.

Hooks that lose viewers, and that Kiryu flags

  • Opening on a logo, an intro card or a fade from black
  • A greeting or a name before the point
  • Text that's too long to read before the next cut
  • Captions placed under the like button or the caption strip
  • The best moment saved for the end instead of teased at the start
  • A first shot that's dark, blurry or still for too long
  • Music that starts loud and buries the first spoken line
  • A hook that promises something the video never shows

The fix is usually small: cut the first second, move the result to the front, shorten the text, or start with the line that's currently third. Kiryu can make cuts, trims and a hook title on your clip from the chat. If the opening shot itself is the problem, it can make a new shot for you to put in front, and says so, because that's a new clip rather than an edit.

Hooks by platform

  • TikTok: most people watch with sound on, so the first spoken line does a lot of the work. See the TikTok video analyzer.
  • Instagram Reels: the first frame often doubles as the cover, so it has to work as a still too. See Instagram Reels feedback.
  • YouTube Shorts: the choice to view or swipe away is tracked in YouTube Studio, so you can see how your hook does. See the YouTube Shorts analyzer.
  • Ads: the hook also has to show the product or problem fast. See the AI ad creative review.

Hook analyzer questions

What is a video hook analyzer?

A tool that judges the opening of a video: whether the first frame, the on-screen text and the first words give a stranger a reason to stop scrolling. Kiryu does this as part of its video review and samples the opening seconds more densely than the rest of the video.

How long is a hook?

Kiryu treats the first three seconds as the hook, because that's where most short-form viewers decide. A good hook usually shows something in the first second and says the point within the first three.

Can I compare several hooks?

Yes. Upload the versions in one message and ask which opening is strongest and why. Each one is analysed and you get one answer that compares them.

Is this the same as the TikTok hook generator?

No. The free hook generator writes hook ideas from a topic before you film. The hook analyzer checks the opening of a video you've already made, and rewrites it if it's weak.

Does it only review the hook?

It focuses on the hook when you ask, but it watches the whole video. Ask for a full review and you also get notes on retention and pacing, clarity of the idea, captions and on-screen text, audio, visual quality, call to action, platform fit.

Is the hook analyzer free?

Sending a video for Kiryu to watch uses a video review. A verified free account gets 1 free video review a day, and paid plans include more in their daily Kiryu allowance.
