Short-form diagnosis

Why did my TikTok flop?

When a TikTok flops, the most common cause is the opening: the first seconds don't show or say anything worth staying for. The rest usually come down to an unclear point, a slow patch, unreadable captions or audio that buries the message. Your retention graph shows when people left; the video shows why.

The short answer

A TikTok usually flops for one of two reasons: people saw it and swiped away, or TikTok showed it to very few people. The first is about the video and you can fix it. The second is about distribution, and the honest advice is to keep posting. Your analytics tell you which one happened: a steep drop at the start of the retention graph means viewers left; decent retention with few For You views means it simply wasn't pushed.

7 reasons in the video, and how to tell which one

Each cause, what it looks like in your analytics, and what to look for when you rewatch.

CauseIn your analyticsIn the video
The hook didn't stop the scrollA steep drop in the first one or two seconds of the retention graph.Nothing changes in the first second; the video opens on a greeting, a logo or a fade; the text is too long to read.
The point wasn't clearPeople stay a few seconds, then leave steadily. You can't say in one sentence what the video is about by the three-second mark.
A slow patch in the middleA sharp dip at one moment, mid-video.A long take, a pause, a silent gap or a shot that repeats what we already saw.
Captions you couldn't readLow average watch time on a talking video.Text under the buttons or caption strip, too small, or gone before it can be read.
The audio fought the messageViewers leave as soon as the talking starts.Music louder than the voice, a muffled mic, or a sound that doesn't fit the mood.
It looked off for TikTokFew views from the For You feed at all.Black bars from a 16:9 clip, another app's watermark, dark or blurry footage.
No reason to engageDecent watch time, almost no comments, shares or follows. No question, no call to action, or one that lands after most people have gone.

Reasons that aren't in the video

  • The video wasn't shown widely yet: early views mostly come from a small test audience
  • It reached the wrong people: the topic doesn't match what your followers come for
  • It's not eligible for the For You feed: TikTok's account status page lists posts with that restriction
  • Timing and luck: the same video can do differently on a different day
  • A sound or clip that was muted or removed after posting

A video review can't see any of these, and Kiryu won't pretend to. If retention was healthy, the video probably isn't the problem, and remaking it won't help as much as posting the next one.

How to get Kiryu to check your TikTok

  1. 1

    Find the moment people left

Open the post's analytics in TikTok and look at the retention graph and the traffic sources. Note the second where the line drops hardest, and whether For You views are low.

  2. 2

Upload the video and say what you saw

Drop the video into a Kiryu chat and write something like "TikTok, most people leave at 0:02, why?". Kiryu looks at exactly what was on screen, said and heard at that second.

  3. 3

Get the cause and the fix

You get timestamped notes, the three fixes that would help most and a rewritten opening. Kiryu can make the edit in the chat, so the next version is ready to post.

Why a second opinion helps

By the time you post, you've watched your own video dozens of times, so you can't see the slow first second or the caption hiding under the like button any more. Kiryu watches it cold: frame by frame, closest in the opening, with a transcript of every line and every caption quoted word for word. Its notes come with timestamps, and a second pass removes any claim it can't match to what was actually in the video.

It works the same on Reels and Shorts. See Instagram Reels feedback, the YouTube Shorts analyzer, or the full TikTok video analyzer. Next time, check the opening before you post with the video hook analyzer.

TikTok flop questions

Why did my TikTok get no views?

Either TikTok showed it to very few people, or people saw it and swiped fast, which stops it being shown further. Check the traffic source and retention in the post's analytics. A big early drop points to the hook. Very few For You views on a video people did watch points to distribution, which no video review can fix.

How do I know if the problem is the video or the algorithm?

Look at retention. If the people who saw it left in the first seconds, the video is the likely cause, and you can fix that. If retention was decent but views stayed low, the video may be fine and simply wasn't shown widely. Post the next one rather than changing everything.

Am I shadowbanned?

Kiryu can't tell, because it only sees the video. TikTok's own account status page shows violations and posts that aren't eligible for the For You feed. If nothing is listed there, a weak opening is a far more common reason for a flop.

Should I delete and repost a TikTok that flopped?

Reposting the same file rarely fixes anything, because whatever lost viewers is still in it. Find the cause first, fix the opening or the slow part, then post the improved version as a new video.

Can AI tell me why my TikTok flopped?

It can tell you what in the video is likely losing viewers, with timestamps. Upload it to Kiryu and it checks the hook, pacing, clarity, captions, audio, visual quality, call to action and platform fit. It can't see your analytics, so tell it where people left.

Is it free to check my video?
